You can usually find out whether you are having a boy or a girl from about 15 to 16 weeks. After that, the fun part is deciding how to tell everyone. Here are ideas that actually work in Bellingham and around Whatcom County, including where to do them and what to watch out for with our weather.
First, a practical note on the reveal itself: if you want to be surprised alongside everyone else, we can seal the result in an envelope so you never see it. Plenty of families hand that envelope straight to a friend or a bakery and find out with their guests.
When can you actually find out?
From around 15 to 16 weeks. Our 2D Gender Reveal session starts at 15 weeks and runs about 30 minutes.
Two honest caveats. Accuracy improves as pregnancy progresses, and it depends a great deal on how your baby is positioned on the day. Ultrasound is a reliable way to determine sex in the second trimester, but it is not a guarantee, and any studio promising 100 percent certainty is overselling. If your baby has their legs crossed and will not budge, we will tell you rather than guess.
Outdoor ideas, and the Bellingham weather reality
We get roughly 35 inches of rain a year and a lot of grey between October and May. Any outdoor plan needs a backup, and anything involving powder, smoke or balloons needs a wind plan too.
Boulevard Park at golden hour
The over-water boardwalk and the Bellingham Bay backdrop are hard to beat, and the light in the hour before sunset is genuinely lovely. It is a public park, so keep the group modest and clean up completely. Powder and confetti are a bad idea here given the water and the wind coming off the bay.
Whatcom Falls Park
The stone bridge and the falls give you a dramatic setting that reads beautifully in photos, and the tree cover means less wind. Weekday mornings are far quieter than weekends.
Lake Padden
Big open grass areas, room for a proper group, easy parking and space for kids to run around. This is the practical choice if you are inviting a real crowd rather than staging a photo.
Birch Bay
Wide beach, long views, a completely different feel from the in-town options. Check the tide before you commit to a time, because the difference between high and low tide out there is dramatic and it changes the whole setting.
The Skagit tulip fields, if your timing lines up
If you are due for a reveal in April, the tulip fields down in the Skagit Valley are a spectacular backdrop and about 40 minutes from Bellingham. This is entirely weather and bloom dependent, and the fields get extremely busy, so go early on a weekday and check what the farms allow before planning anything involving props.
Indoor and all-weather ideas
The cake or cupcake cut
Still the classic, and it works because it is impossible to mess up. Hand your sealed envelope to a local bakery and let them do the rest. Cupcakes travel better than a full cake and mean everyone gets the moment at once rather than crowding a single knife.
Balloon in a box
A large plain box, a helium balloon inside, and a lid that lifts. Reliable, cheap, photographs well, and works indoors on a wet January afternoon. This is the one we see most often for a reason.
Paint or powder handprints
Especially good if you have older children who want a job. Everyone presses a hand onto a canvas in the reveal colour, and you end up with something to hang rather than just a photo.
Scratch off cards for far away family
If half your family is in another state, custom scratch cards mailed out in advance let everyone find out at the same moment on a video call. Genuinely lovely for grandparents who cannot travel.
Ideas that need more thought than people expect
We are not going to pretend these are all a good idea just because they are popular.
Coloured smoke bombs. The photos are stunning. But Whatcom County sees burn bans in the drier months, smoke devices are not permitted in a lot of parks, and dry grass plus a smoke device is how gender reveals end up in the news. If you want this, check current county fire restrictions, get permission for wherever you are standing, and have water on hand.
Confetti cannons and powder. Fine on private property. Less fine in a public park where somebody has to pick up plastic confetti afterwards, and genuinely bad near the bay where it goes straight into the water. Biodegradable confetti or dried flower petals solve this.
Balloon releases. Please do not. Released balloons come down as litter and are a real hazard to marine and bird life, which matters a lot on this coastline. A balloon in a box gives you the same reveal without any of that.
Anything involving a firearm or explosive. No.
Making it a two part day
Something we see a lot and genuinely like: families book the ultrasound in the morning, keep the envelope sealed, and hold the reveal that afternoon or evening. The scan becomes part of the event rather than a separate errand.
If you go this route, a few things help. Book on a Saturday, since we have weekend appointments. Bring whoever you want into the room, because there is no limit and grandparents love being there. And tell us clearly when you book that you do not want to know, so nobody says anything by accident. We take that seriously.
You also leave with prints and a recording in the Momitalk app, which is useful if you want to show the scan itself at the party.
Doing both a reveal and a 3D session
The gender reveal window and the best window for 3D face images are completely different. Sex can be determined from 15 to 16 weeks, while the best 3D facial images come between 26 and 32 weeks. They are months apart.
